The DirectX SDK has a rather handy utility called GraphEdit that lets you do handy things such as download WM[AV] streams to a file. Awfully handy if you need such a thing.

The thing that intercepts audio playback to files on Linux is Vsound. For Windows, try VAC (or StepVoice, but it's just a normal sound recorder with MP3 out). On a Mac, it's WireTap.
